      Merchant's House

The Merchant’s House is one of the few surviving grand nineteenth century city houses that are still in residential use in Derry. Built in the Georgian style almost 150 years ago for a naval surgeon, its architectural features survive largely intact. This is a building that will appeal to guests who enjoy architecture and want to savour the atmosphere of a bygone era without dispensing with the comforts and conveniences of the present century.

The Merchant’s House has eight guest bedrooms, most of which have ensuite bathrooms, spread over four floors. All bedrooms have central heating, TV, clock radio, tea and coffee making facilities, and a hairdryer. There is a small balcony area overlooking an enclosed patio courtyard at the rear of the house which can be an attractive outdoors venue when the weather permits. The high ceilinged dining room with its original plasterwork and its Hogarth prints, where breakfast is served, retains the elegant proportion of the Georgian era.  Guests have breakfast on the large family table in the dining room where people have an opportunity to meet and exchange stories with fellow travellers, if they wish.  The wide staircase that leads to the spacious and grand first floor drawing room or parlour, with its handsome marble fireplace, hint at the gracious lifestyle of the city’s merchant class a century and a half ago.  This lovely room, stocked with a range of guide and travel books, provides an ideal setting in which to relax.

Because guest bedrooms are located on four floors, with no lift or elevator, the house may pose a challenge for visitors with mobility problems.  Guests can avail, free of charge, of the use of a computer with internet access, and of WiFi facilities. Pets are welcome at no extra cost.  A washing machine and a dryer are available, at a moderate cost, if required.  Unrestricted free on-street car parking can be found just around the corner, on Clarendon Street. There is also a low cost surface car park nearby on Strand Road.
